CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ

Born in Caracas in 1923 and based in Paris from 1960 onwards, Carlos Cruz-Diez is regarded as one of the leading figures of Kinetic Art and geometric abstraction in the twentieth century. Alongside Jesús Rafael Soto and Alejandro Otero, he played a pivotal role in the emergence of the Venezuelan avant-garde, helping to establish Latin America as one of the most innovative centres for research into colour and perception.

Trained at the School of Fine and Applied Arts in Caracas, he began his career as an illustrator and graphic designer before gradually turning towards abstraction. From the late 1950s onwards, he embarked on the fundamental investigation that would define his entire career: liberating colour from form and treating it as an autonomous reality evolving through space and time.

This research gave rise to several iconic series, including the Physichromies, Chromointerferences, Chromatic Inductions, Transchromies and Chromosaturations. Through these works, Cruz-Diez demonstrated that colour is not a fixed property of an object but an unstable phenomenon that changes according to light, the viewer's movement and the conditions of perception.

His work has been exhibited at some of the world's foremost institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. His monumental public interventions, immersive environments and architectural integrations have brought his work far beyond the museum context.

Both artist and theorist, Cruz-Diez devoted nearly seven decades to the study of the chromatic phenomenon. His work profoundly transformed our understanding of colour, establishing him as one of the most influential artists in the history of contemporary art and an essential reference in the field of international Kinetic Art.
