Manuel Mérida

Matter in Motion

For over fifty years, Manuel Mérida has been developing a unique body of work where color becomes living matter. At the crossroads of painting, sculpture, and kinetic art, his creations transform pigments, powders, and minerals into ever-evolving forms.

THE ORIGINS OF A RESEARCH

Born in Valencia, Venezuela, Manuel Mérida trained in fine arts before moving to Paris in the late 1960s. This period marked a decisive turning point in his career. There, he discovered the research of kinetic artists and deepened his reflection on movement, light, and perception.

Very early on, however, his interest shifted less towards optical illusion and more towards the physical behaviors of matter itself. This intuition would become the foundation of all his work.

MATTER AS LANGUAGE

In Manuel Mérida’s works, color is never simply applied to a surface. Pigments, sands, ashes, or metallic powders are enclosed in circular structures where they remain free to move.

With every movement, the material reorganizes itself, forming new shapes and new balances. The artwork is no longer a fixed image but a phenomenon in constant transformation.

This approach gives rise to a unique visual language where chance, gravity, and time directly participate in the composition.

THE WORK IN MOVEMENT

While many kinetic artists work on visual effects, Manuel Mérida seeks to produce real movement.

His circular reliefs, activated by the viewer or a discreet mechanism, evolve continuously. The colored masses move slowly, appearing then disappearing, creating an infinity of possible compositions.

Each work thus becomes an experience of time, inviting the gaze to slow down and observe the metamorphoses of matter.
